The Queen of Hearts: The Confessions of An ‘Accidental’ Leader

I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…

So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

I have learned that nothing in life happens by accident.  Success, however you may define it, doesn’t come by chance.  Scores of stories have been told of successful business men & women who, like the young man in the story, laboured tirelessly and often against great odds, in pursuit of their goals.

There is a billboard I once saw near my son’s playgroup that caught my eye.   It said something to the effect of “Manu Dibango (Cameroonian saxophonist and vibraphone player) – it took 24 years to become an overnight success!”  Success rarely, if ever, happens overnight.  Rather, success is made up of a series of small, often tedious & monotonous steps forward – success is a result of prayers, blood, sweat & tears.

This is equally true of your career – that business you have been talking about starting, that promotion you have your eye on, that pay rise you wish to negotiate. It won’t happen by chance – as a result of good luck or fortuitous timing.  It will happen because you have planned for it, you have identified the steps that you need to take & you have taken the first step.  And the next.  And the one after that.

Many think negatively about their prospects, dreams and ambitions, allowing their day to day reality to get them down. It is easy to become disconnected from your path and your ambitions, discouraged by the myriad of minutiae or the office politics.

The late Jim Rohn, a man considered America’s foremost business philosopher, says that, “You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” 

The Parable of thetalents is one of the well-known parables of Jesus. It tells of a master who was leaving his home to travel, and before going entrusted his property to his servants. One servant receives five talents, the second two talents, and the third one talent, according to their respective abilities.

Returning after a long absence, the master asks his servants for an accounting. The first two servants explain that they have each put their money to work and doubled the value of the property they were entrusted with, and so they are each rewarded.  The third servant, however, has merely hidden his talent in a hole in the ground, and is punished for being lazy.

The question is – which one are you?  Are you utilising the opportunities before you or is your head buried in the sand?  You hold the key.  Who you are today & what you have achieved, has little to do who you can become & what you can achieve – a month from now, 6 months from now, a year from now.  Wherever you decide you want to be 5/10 years from now, you must invest your time, energies and talents today. 

Ultimately, it’s all up to you… Emotional Intelligence is being more aware, more intentional & more purposeful. Are you living out your purpose?
