Lesson 37: Using Head + Heart

I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…
So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

Lesson No 37: Using Head + Heart

“It’s easy until you have to do it”

Mucha Mlingo

Progress.  Not perfection.

I finally got into the pool this week.  My son started at his school 5 years ago & I have been telling myself – for 5 years, that I would utilise the option that parents have to swim in the morning.  As I dove into the water, I wondered why it had taken me so long.

As I made my way from one end of the pool to the other, I remembered a session I had facilitated a few days before, and a comment I had made…

“Emotions either push you towards your goals or pull you away”

Mucha Mlingo

Driving change requires using both sides of your brain. You need heart to reach your goals. You must tap into your emotions.
When was the last time you asked yourself how you feel about your goals? Why?  And Why?  And Why?

Knowledge is power.  Every emotion can be used as fuel to propel you forwards, even emotions that you have traditionally thought of as ‘bad.’ Remember emotions are neither negative or positive – they are data. The key is to know what you feel so that you can use it.

On the other hand, passion alone will take you nowhere. The rational part of the brain needs to be just as committed as the heart. Building a clear plan will keep you focused and drive you into action. Having measurable goals will make you more accountable and help you monitor progress.

So how do we use both head & heart? According to Six Seconds – it’s being smart with your feelings. Know Yourself, Choose Yourself & Give Yourself.

  1. Know Yourself: Increase awareness.  Notice your feelings and reactions.
  2. Choose Yourself: Increase choice.  Pause and consider options.  Respond instead of reacting.
  3. Give Yourself: Increase purpose.  Pay attention to what’s truly important in the situation.

I wonder if part of me – my heart, was not in agreement with my head when I made the plans to start swimming.  Perhaps that’s why it took 5 years to get into the pool.

Emotional Intelligence is being more aware, more intentional & more purposeful.  How Emotionally Intelligent are you?

With Love,
The Queen Of Hearts
