Lesson 36: Un-Plugged

The Queen of Hearts: The Confessions of An ‘Accidental’ Leader

I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…

So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

Lesson No 36: Un-Plugged

“Almost anything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you”

~ Anne Lamott

I know it’s important to take time out.  Really, I do!  But somehow – over the last few months, as things have gotten tougher & I have found myself having to dig deeper so that I can continue to navigate this challenging season I find myself in – I had forgotten.

It’s so easy to get caught up in ‘doing’ – rushing from one meeting to the next, from one assignment to another, that you forget to refuel.  And yet we all know that a car can’t possibly run on empty.

Leadership can be extremely rewarding.  It can also take a serious toll on one’s life – mentally, emotionally and physically. I am learning & re-learning that I need to be INTENTIONAL about taking the time out that I need to refuel.

A friend recently recommended a book – ‘Ordering Your Private World’ by Gordon MacDonald. I was particularly struck by an observation that he made;

Biblical writers…knew & taught that the development & maintenance of our inner worlds should be our highest priority… What they wrote, they received from the Creator who made us to work most effectively from the inner world to the outer’

 “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life”

~ Proverbs 4:23

It’s easy to feel like spending any time un-plugged is time spent away from your business, and that you’re ultimately losing money. The reality is though that we at our most effective, when we are at our best – and our best requires regular stops to re-fuel & remind ourselves why we do what we do. As the year winds down & you start thinking through your list of strategic business goals for 2020, be sure to include some regular time out.  It will give you the space you need to take time to renew, reenergize, refocus, and return to work with a heightened sense of clarity, contentment, and purpose.

Emotional Intelligence is being more aware, more intentional & more purposeful.  How Emotionally Intelligent are you?

With Love,

The Queen Of Hearts
