Lesson No 43: Glass Half Full

The Queen of Hearts: The Confessions of An ‘Accidental’ Leader

I didn’t purpose to be in the space that I find myself in.  God plucked me from the path that I had set out for myself & set me on an alternative journey. At the start it all appeared somewhat ‘accidental’ but I know now that it was no accident, rather His design, His purpose for my life…

So now that I am here, these are my confessions…the lessons I am learning about being a woman in business, building an empire, one brick at a time…

Lesson No 43: Glass Half Full

“New year—a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately, we write it. The choice is ours.”

Alex Morritt

In a 1995 study, Dr. Martin Seligman, a psychologist Doctor Martin at the University of Pennsylvania compared optimism scores to performance of salespeople across several industries, including insurance, office products, real estate, banking, and car sales. The results across all studies indicated that optimists outsold pessimists by 20 to 40 per cent.

What is interesting about Dr Seligman’s research is the fact that optimism is actually a skill – it is not a fixed trait.  Whilst an individual may have a predilection towards optimism or pessimism, they can learn to respond differently.

Optimism is defined as ‘hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something.’ It is the ability to confront reality with the conviction that problems that arise can be solved.

Optimism is a cornerstone of resilience, and an asset in achieving any kind of success.  The key is to view setbacks as temporary, isolated (not pervasive), not personal & within your power to fix. Every obstacle has a solution. Successful leaders acknowledge the seriousness of the problem, but choose rather to focus on finding the solution, thus exercising optimism and strengthening the growth mindset.

Emotional Intelligence is being more aware, more intentional & more purposeful.
